Michael Howley
Born in the North of England, Michael Howley’s atmospheric landscape paintings have been shaped by the environment in which he grew up and his emotional and spiritual response to it.
Known for his uniquely sensitive approach to soft pastel painting, Michael also draws on the qualities of oils, watercolours and acrylics to recreate a sense of the presence of nature in all her different moods.

“I like to go out early in the morning as the mists rise and the sun slowly awakes, or in the evening as it fades behind the hills, leaving only an afterglow. At these times, the atmosphere is palpable and the shift in colours and tones is so subtle. I take photographs and make sketches, and when I return to the studio, I draw upon the memory of how it felt to be present in that particular landscape.”
